San Jose man sues DirecTV over allegedly unwanted calls

SAN JOSE – A resident of San Jose is suing DirecTV over allegations that the company contacted his cellphone without permission.

Yashar Mehdad filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division on Jan. 8, citing violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

According to the lawsuit, DirecTV made unsolicited commercial phone calls to Mehdad’s phone in an attempt to collect a debt by using equipment that stores or produces phone numbers to be called This equipment uses a random or sequential number generator with a pre-recorded call, the suit states. Mehdad alleges that he has never been a customer of DirecTV and did not give his permission to be contacted or provided his number.

The plaintiff is seeking $500 in statutory damages for each and every violation and treble damages of up to $1,500 for each and every violation. Michael S. Agruss of the Agruss Law Firm in Chicago will represent Mehdad.
