SAN FRANCISCO – An individual from San Mateo County alleges an insurance company failed to pay on a life insurance policy after the plaintiff's spouse died.

Christopher Chow filed a suit Feb. 2 in the U.S. District Court Northern District of California against Riversource Life Insurance Co. and Ameriprise Financial Services Inc., citing breach of contract, breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and negligence.

According to the complaint, Chow alleges that after his wife died on Nov. 19, 2015, he inquired about how to submit an application for the insurance benefits left by her, but was informed that the financial adviser made an error in completing the forms with regards to making Chow the primary beneficiary of the plan. The suit states that the defendants have not rectified their error and that they rejected his claims seeking the death benefits.

Chow seeks $1 million for mental and emotional distress, attorney's fees and costs of suit, and any other relief the court deems just and proper. Chow is represented by Glenn R. Kantor, Alan E. Kassan and Brent Dorian Brehm of Kantor & Kantor LLP in Northridge.
