University of San Francisco graduate appointed to the board of Global Sources in Hong Kong

HONG KONG -- A former partner with Russin & Vecchi law firm has been named one of two newly appointed members of the board for Global Sources Ltd. 

Michael Scown, who worked as an associate and partner in Russin & Vecchi law firm from 1988 to 1998, filled one of the board seats at Global Sources Ltd. The shareholders of the Chinese company reappointed him during their annual meeting. Scown was joined by Fumbi Chima as the other appointee to the board.

Merle A. Hinrich, executive chairman at Global Sources, praised the extensive experience and knowledge of the two new appointees in the Asian region in the company’s official announcement. He said that both Scown and Chima are experts in the fields of retail, finance and technology strategy.

"Global Sources welcomes Ms. Chima and Mr. Scown to our board. Both leaders have in-depth industry knowledge in the Asian region. Their expertise and leadership will be instrumental as we focus on driving the growth of our business,” Hinrich said in a press release.

Prior to his appointment at Global Sources, Scown served as the regional counsel for Asia of Intel Capital from 1999 to 2006. He worked as an associate and partner in Russin & Vecchi's San Francisco and Ho Chi Minh City offices. He also worked as the regional counsel for Marriott International Inc. Before beginning his legal career, Scown was a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State from 1985 to 1988.

Scown has been the Asia managing director, treasury, for Intel Capital since 2006. From 2007 to 2015, he served on the board of directors and auditor for the Chinese company eLong Inc. He was also a director of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association from 2008 to 2013. He also was a founding member of the board of governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, chapter in 1994 to 1998 where he served as chairman from 1995 to 1996.

The former Russin & Vecchi partner graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley. Scown is a member of the California Bar.

Global Sources is a media company focused on business-to-business services. The Hong Kong-based company facilitates trade between Asia and other nations worldwide, utilizing English language media platforms, including online marketplaces, trade shows, magazines and apps.
