FRESNO — Surviving relatives are suing a Clovis medical facility, alleging negligence in the handling of a family member's remains.

Norita Riley, Leslie Curtis Riley Jr. and Aaron Riley filed a complaint Oct. 9 in Fresno County Superior Court against Clovis Community Medical Center and Does 1-50, alleging failure to exercise the standard care and skill required of medical providers.

According to the complaint, the Rileys have suffered and continue to suffer great physical and emotional pain, suffering, anxiety, depression anger, and embarrassment, as a result of the defendants' negligence, including the mistreatment of the remains of Leslie Curtis Riley Sr., who died July 27.

The plaintiffs allege Clovis Community Medical Center failed to perform an autopsy, failed to timely transfer Riley's remains, allowed the remains to decompose, preventing a full and complete autopsy and preventing a timely and proper burial, and failed to follow proper procedures for handling the decedent’s remains,.

The Rileys seek trial by jury, special and general damages, prejudgment interest, costs of suit, and further damages and all relief as determined by the court. They are represented by attorney James J. Mele of Mele Law Office in Fresno.
