SAN FRANCISCO – A San Francisco business has filed suit against unknown internet users alleging they attacked its commerce site and demanded ransom.
Ebates Inc. filed a complaint on April 12 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Does 1-211, owners of email addresses elizabeth52863@hotmail.com, sienna8763@ymail.com and ellie65226@ymail.com, et al., citing violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, conversion and trespass.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in April 1 its primary e-commerce domain was shut down for six hours as a result of a distributed denial of service attack. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because the defendants allegedly sent the plaintiff a series of demands for ransom payments paid in Bitcoin.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury, monetary damages to be proven in trial but in excess of $100,000, an order to pay plaintiff damages to be proven in trial plus interest, all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems just.
