SAN FRANCISCO – A retired aerospace and defense engineer living in Canada alleges two social media companies use his copyrighted security software applications.

Saadeldin (Dean) El-Sedfy filed a complaint on July 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Whatsapp Inc. and Facebook Inc. alleging copyright infringement.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff is the founder of SR&ED Engineering Inc. in Ontario and has developed AntiSpySMS, BusyTeam and e_ScutSheet, apps for securely communicating with other people. The plaintiff holds Whatsapp Inc. and Facebook Inc. responsible because the defendants allegedly use his copyrighted work without his authorization.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks to enjoin the defendants, an order that all infringing copies of plaintiff's products be disposed of or destroyed, statutory damages plus interest, trebling of damages, all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems just. He is representing himself.
