MCGUIREWOODS LLP: McGuireWoods’ Greg Evans Profiled in UC Berkeley Social Welfare

Lawyer

McGuireWoods LLP issued the following announcement on June 17.

McGuireWoods partner Greg Evans was featured in an alumni profile in the Spring 2019 edition of Social Welfare at Berkeley, a published by the University of California. Evans, a litigator in the downtown Los Angeles office and member of the firm’s Board of Partners, earned a master’s degree from the School of Welfare in 1986.

“Throughout his career, he has consistently used the law as a tool to advance the social welfare values he learned at Cal, ensuring the setting and implementation of policy that enables the day-to-day work of direct service,” the article noted. Evans will join the school’s Dean’s Advisory Board in the coming year.

The profile covered Evans’ history of pro bono work and community involvement. He explained how his mother, a daughter of immigrants, “taught us by example the importance of helping others even though you may be of limited means. That’s when I first became interested in working in the area of social welfare and social policy.”

Evans said he learned about UC Berkeley’s MSW program while applying to law schools. The program, he said, “helped me to understand that as a lawyer you could actually improve social welfare program implementation, and where necessary help to redesign and redirect social welfare programs that may be headed in the wrong direction, or may be unconstitutional, or unfair, or disproportionately administered.”
