Parents claim son's suicide in jail could have been prevented

SACRAMENTO -- A family's lawsuit claims wrongful death while their son was detained in Shasta County jail.

Circe and Richard Adena, surviving parents of John Adena, filed a complaint on April 29 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California against Shasta County, Shasta County Sheriff-Coroner Tom Bosenko, Captial Dave Kent, multiple Shasta County Jail Deputies, Wellpath Inc., Wellpath Management, Inc. Tracey Lewis, L.M.F.T., Pam Johansen L.C.S.W., Daniel Dellwo, P.A. and does 1-20.

According to the complaint, John Adena was detained in the Shasta County jail. Circe and Richard Adena allege that Tracy Lewis L.M.F.T., Pam Johansen, L.C.S.W. and Daniel Dellwo, P.A. were employed by Wellpath. 

Circe and Richard Adena allege that failed to properly assess the mental health needs of John Adena and failed to request proper suicide precautions upon discharge from a safety cell. Circe and Richard also allege Lewis failed to request increase observation and create a treatment plan. 

Circe and Richard Adena allege that Johansen failed to properly assess and address John Adena's mental and medical needs, failed to request or institute any increased observation and failed to summon appropriate and emergency medical care when Adena was vomiting. Circe and Richard allege that Dellwo failed to transfer to the hospital for appropriate medical care what was suspected was an "organic" cause of psychosis. 

Circe and Richard Adena seek compensatory and exemplary damages and punitive damages. The Adenas are represented by Julia Sherwin of Haddad and Sherwin PPL.
