Paul Pitts, a partner in Reed Smith's Life Sciences Health Industry Group, has been selected by the Daily Journal for its 2023 list of Top Health Care Lawyers. Each year, the award recognizes attorneys across the state for their achievements and for overcoming significant challenges to assist clients.
Pitts, who is office managing partner in San Francisco, is highly regarded for his work advising health care companies in complex transactional and regulatory matters. He guides companies on business transactions, joint ventures, integrated delivery models, and various services arrangements, as well as regulatory guidance on federal and state laws, including the federal anti-kickback statute, federal physician self-referral law, False Claims Act and HIPAA, among others.
In the past two years, Pitts represented companies in a number of significant deals. He provided specialized regulatory and privacy counsel to McKesson in a widely publicized joint venture with HCA Healthcare. The transaction was one of the most significant in the oncology clinical trial space, allowing the companies to provide services to patients on a wider scale across a broader geographic area. Among his other notable transactions, he advised Advanced Radiology in its sale to Radiology Partners and represented Webster Equity Partners and its portfolio company Redwood Family Care Network on health care regulatory due diligence in six significant transactions.
Pitts also advised clients on various high-stakes investigation and litigation matters, and represented pharmaceutical companies in a wide range of transactional matters, a drug delivery platform, and numerous hot-button issues related to COVID-19, and the groundbreaking U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs.
With the rapid evolution of digital health technology, Pitts is on the forefront of the wide array of technology solutions and how they impact care delivery, payment models, and regulatory compliance.
Pitts was selected by the Daily Journal as a Top Health Care Lawyer in 2019 and is active in various professional organizations, including the American Health Lawyers Association, California Society for Professionals in Healthcare, California Society for Healthcare Attorneys, and Radiology Business Management Association. He also serves as chair of the Life Sciences Interest Group of the American Bar Association Health Law Section.
