Mayer Brown partners Elizabeth (Liz) Espín Stern, Nina Flax and Grace Shie were recognized in Corporate Counsel’s 2023 Women, Influence and Power in Law Awards. The annual list honors top women lawyers who are business strategists, complex problem-solvers and who demonstrate a “commitment to advancing the empowerment of women in law,” according to the publication.

Liz, managing partner of Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office and leader of the Global Mobility & Migration practice, was recognized in the “Managing Partner of the Year” category. Liz has been instrumental in leading the firm’s DC office through the tail end of the pandemic and post-pandemic years, re-establishing a collegial office culture with care and dedication and creating an open and active dialogue as the firm transitioned into a hybrid model. An inclusive and visionary leader, Liz emphasizes that diverse viewpoints are a must as she continues to move the needle for women and minorities in the legal profession.Nina, co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Technology & IP Transactions practice, was recognized in the “Innovative Leadership” category for “impacting change and developing new strategies for better solutions.” Earlier this year, Nina designed and implemented the Technology General Counsel in Residence program—a first-of-its-kind at a law firm. Nina is among just a handful of women lawyers in the nation who lead the most sophisticated, high-value deals for foreign and multinational corporations and other public and private entities across a wide range of technology and other industries. She is also an active member of the firm’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion.

Grace, a partner in the firm's Global Mobility & Migration practice in Washington DC and chair of the Women’s Leadership Committee, was recognized in the “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Champion” (DEI) category. Grace has dedicated herself to creating a positive narrative for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community – one that focuses on raising the profiles of fellow AAPI practitioners and showcasing the rich diversity of their leadership styles. She has led multiple efforts aimed at the recruitment, retention and promotion of women lawyers for the firm. In May 2023, Grace conceptualized and hosted the firm’s first-ever joint Diversity Retreat in partnership with a firm client—a DEI innovation that centered on building community.
