Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP added Rebecca J. Olson to its Government Law & Policy Practice as a shareholder in its Sacramento office.

Olson joins with her team of political compliance professionals from Miller & Olson LLP, a firm she founded and managed for more than 12 years.

Her well-rounded practice spans the gamut of political, campaign, election, and nonprofit law. Olson and her team guide clients such as corporations and trade associations through the process of setting up and managing Political Action Committees (PACs). She also advises on compliance with the California Political Reform Act, including representing clients before the Fair Political Practices Commission, as well as lobbying compliance at both the state and federal level.

Olson provides advice on the formation and operation of 501(c) organizations, with a particular focus on compliance with Internal Revenue Code and maintaining tax-exempt status.

“California’s political environment is uniquely complex when it comes to compliance, and there are few attorneys who know this space better than Rebecca,” said Alice L. Kessler and Timothy Long, co-managing shareholders of the firm’s Sacramento office. “Rebecca adds robustness to an already strong California Government Law & Policy Practice and will complement other existing capabilities here in California and across the country. We look forward to bringing her broad array of services to our clients.”

Olson also maintains a robust lobbying and legislative compliance practice, which includes advising ballot measure committees seeking to mount initiative and referendum campaigns.

“Over the course of the last 10-15 years, we have seen exponential increases in federal, state, and local political spending, met with sweeping changes in the governance of campaign expenditures, political advertising, and the like. Rebecca has seen these changes first-hand and has been guiding clients through it all along the way. Greenberg Traurig’s clients, not just in California, but all across the country, will benefit from her experience in this space,” said Demetrius G. McDaniel and Harold N. Iselin, co-chairs of the firm's Government Law & Policy Practice.

Earlier this year, the firm added Robert C. Ross, former chief legal counsel to Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, to its Boston Government Law & Policy Practice as of counsel.

“After managing my own firm for more than a decade, I am thrilled to join a powerhouse like Greenberg Traurig where I will have the capacity and resources to serve my clients in new and exciting ways,” Olson said.

Olson earned her J.D. from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, where she serves as an adjunct professor teaching Election Law.
