Mayer Brown announced that litigator Anthony (Tony) Weibell has joined the firm as a partner in Northern California. Tony brings substantial experience in consumer class action, privacy and internet law matters. He joins from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

“Tony is a well-regarded Silicon Valley litigator and counselor whose broad-based litigation practice dovetails nicely with our preeminent team of more than 500 litigators,” said Richard Spehr, the leader of Mayer Brown’s global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice.

Tony serves as lead litigation counsel for premier technology companies in diverse areas of complex civil litigation involving consumer class actions, privacy, e-commerce, intellectual property, antitrust, false advertising and contractual disputes. He is an arbitrator, special master, referee and a member of the Academy of Court-Appointed Neutrals and has adjudicated hundreds of civil matters by appointment and party stipulation.

In recent years, Tony has represented leading internet and technology companies, such as Google, TikTok (ByteDance) and Roblox Corporation, in consumer class actions that have examined issues of first impression.

“Privacy class actions and internet class action-related litigation are at an all-time high in California and across the country,” said Lee Rubin, the leader of Mayer Brown's Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice in Northern California. “Tony’s wealth of experience in consumer privacy and internet law will further enhance Mayer Brown’s strong practice in this key area and will be a significant advantage for our clients in these high-stakes matters.”

Tony’s practice also includes advising companies on compliance with consumer protection, privacy, and internet law, such as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), the Wiretap Act, the Stored Communications Act, the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), the Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA), and other unfair competition and consumer protection laws.

“Mayer Brown is a values-based collaborative firm with a robust platform of national class action, data privacy and technology litigators, where my consumer privacy and internet law practice will thrive,” said Tony. “We are seeing courts and regulators take a much more expansive view of privacy laws—turning yesterday’s standard privacy practices into today’s privacy nightmares for companies that handle consumer data. I look forward to working with the firm’s top litigators to defend clients across industries in these cutting-edge matters.”

Ward Johnson, managing partner of Mayer Brown’s Northern California office, said, “We are excited to welcome Tony to our premier litigation team in California. His breadth of experience aligns perfectly with our litigation offerings in the technology, data privacy and AI spaces.”
