A California resident has filed a lawsuit against a prominent healthcare provider, alleging severe breaches of privacy and negligence. Trenice Joice Lane initiated the complaint on March 13, 2025, in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, accusing Kaiser Permanente of multiple infractions including unauthorized access to her medical records.
The lawsuit details how Lane discovered on July 12, 2024, that her private medical records had been accessed by an unauthorized individual. This revelation came from Angela Anderson, an employee at Kaiser Permanente. The records included sensitive information about breast surgery Lane underwent on January 16, 2024. Lane's complaint accuses Kaiser Permanente of failing to protect her privacy and refusing to disclose critical information about the breach despite repeated requests. "Plaintiff is embarrassed, mortified and upset," the complaint states, highlighting the emotional distress caused by the incident.
Lane's legal action comprises several causes of action including negligence, invasion of privacy through public disclosure of private facts, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She alleges that Kaiser Permanente failed in its duty to safeguard her personal information and neglected to train or supervise employees adequately to prevent such breaches. The complaint argues that this failure led to significant emotional and reputational harm for Lane.
In addition to compensatory damages for emotional distress and loss of reputation, Lane seeks punitive damages against Kaiser Permanente for acting with malice in handling her private information. She also demands injunctive relief to prevent further dissemination of her private data and seeks a judicial declaration regarding her rights and Kaiser's obligations under these circumstances.
