SAN FRANCISCO – A Florida widow is suing Twitter over claims it lets terrorist groups use its social media platform.
Tamara Fields, a citizen of Florida and the representative of the estate of Lloyd Fields Jr., filed a lawsuit lawsuit Jan. 13 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Twitter Inc., citing civil liability.
According to the complaint, Twitter has permitted the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria to use its social network to spread extremist propaganda, raise funds and attract new recruits. It allegedly has been instrumental in ISIS’ rise and had aided the group in carrying out terrorist attacks, which includes to Nov. 9 shooting attack in Amman, Jordan, which killed Fields Jr., the complaint states. The suit states that Twitter has refused to take any action regarding the group's use of the platform.
Fields is seeking judgment against Twitter and have the company pay compensatory damages, treble damages and court costs. L. Timothy Fisher, Scott A. Bursor and Julia A. Luster of Bursor and Fisher P.A. in New York and Walnut Creek, California are representing the plaintiff.
