Denise Aguilar, co-founder of Freedom Angels, said in a post on X that rising car insurance premiums are becoming unmanageable and attributed the issue to Governor Gavin Newsom's policies, which she claims are driving insurance companies out of California.
"Anyone else finding it a nightmare to insure your car," said Aguilar. "I can't believe how much these companies are charging. Gavin has destroyed the working class."
The statement reflects growing concern among California drivers about increasing car insurance premiums. This follows announcements from several major insurers that they are reducing operations in the state. State Farm and Allstate, for example, have scaled back new auto policy offerings in California, citing increasing costs and regulatory delays. According to the Los Angeles Times, these moves have fueled a perception that insurers are abandoning the California market.
According to the California Department of Insurance, auto insurance rates in the state have seen sharp increases since 2022, with some drivers experiencing hikes of over 30%. Insurers have cited inflation, increased claims severity, and supply chain disruptions for vehicle parts as reasons for the premium spikes.
A 2024 report by the Consumer Federation of America found that California saw some of the highest auto insurance rate filings in the U.S. in the previous year. The report attributes this in part to regulatory friction between insurers and state authorities, particularly regarding Proposition 103, which requires prior approval of rate changes.
Third-party litigation funding (TPLF) is a practice where outside investors finance lawsuits in exchange for a portion of the settlement or judgment. By enabling plaintiffs to pursue more aggressive and prolonged legal action, TPLF has driven up the size and frequency of large jury awards, especially nuclear verdicts. This raises insurers’ claim costs. To offset these losses, insurers increase premiums, expand deductibles, and narrow coverage terms, ultimately passing the financial burden onto consumers and policyholders.
