Woman alleges insurance company denied coverage of treatment at Betty Ford Center

Insurance 02

SAN FRANCISCO – A San Mateo County woman claims her insurance company denied coverage for treatment at a substance abuse center.

Kelly Bradley filed a complaint on May 13 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. citing breach of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that between Sept. 20, 2013, and Oct. 27, 2013, she received treatment at the Betty Ford Center. She alleges she submitted a claim for benefits to the defendant but the claim was denied, leaving her to pay for her own medical expenses. The plaintiff holds UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. responsible because the defendant allegedly denied plaintiff's benefit claim without providing any reasonable explanation as to why it was denied.

The plaintiff seeks payment of health insurance under the plan, interest, all legal fees and any other relief as this court deems just. She is represented by Lisa S. Kantor and Peter S. Sessions of Kantor & Kantor LLP in Northridge.
