Woman alleges Unum Life wrongfully terminated disability benefits

Insurance 11

LOS ANGELES – A woman alleges her long-term disability benefits were wrongfully terminated.

Kristen S. Speer filed a complaint on Nov. 7 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against Unum Life Insurance Co. of America, Unum Group, The Travel Corp., The Travel Corp. Long Term Disability Plan, The Travel Corp. Life Insurance Plan and Does 1 through 10 citing the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in 2014, she became disabled and was initially being paid long-term disability benefits until the benefits were terminated in 2015. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because the defendants allegedly denied plaintiff's claim for long-term disability benefits despite being disabled according to the terms of the plan.

The plaintiff seeks damages, unpaid benefits, collateral benefits, interest, all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems just. She is represented by Stuart H. Sandhaus of Stuart H. Sandhaus, APC in San Juan Capistrano.
