Federal government claims two student loans are in default from individual

LOS ANGELES – A San Bernardino County man is alleged to have defaulted on two education loans.

United States of America, on behalf of the Department of Education, filed a complaint on Dec. 29 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against Michael D. Rhem alleging that the individual failed to settle his debt with the plaintiff.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges Rhem failed to pay the principal amount of his debts plus interest.

The plaintiff seeks principal amount of $2,804.51 plus interest of $5,977.13 with accruing thereafter at 8 percent per annum on one loan; a principal amount of $4,740.97 plus $12,399.99 in interest on a second loan; all legal fees and any other relief as the court deems just. It is represented by Kathryn E. Van Houten of Irsfeld, Irsfeld & Younger LLP in Glendale.
