City of Fresno seeks subrogation from individual who allegedly injured officer

FRESNO – The city of Fresno is seeking subrogation from an individual who allegedly injured one of its police officers.

City of Fresno filed a complaint on July 12 in the Fresno County Superior Court against Dedrick Debrotis Shelton Jr. and Does 1-10 seeking workers' compensation subrogation.

According to the complaint, on July 18, 2016, police officer Darren Nelson, during the course and scope of his employment with the defendant, suffered multiple lacerations and gravel in his right elbow, a torn rotator cuff and other injuries after the defendant punched him in the face and Nelson attempted to apprehend him. 

The plaintiff alleges it paid medical costs for Nelson because of Shelton's carelessness.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against defendant for compensatory damages according to proof. It is represented by Kristi Costa and Douglas T. Sloan of Fresno City Attorney's Office in Fresno.
