St. Jude Medical employee alleges he is entitled to long-term disability benefits

LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles County man alleges his claim for long-term disability benefits was wrongfully denied.

Sanford Widran filed a complaint on Aug. 17 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against Life Insurance Co. of North America alleging violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was an employee of St. Jude Medical Inc. and participated in its employee benefit plan. He alleges he suffered an injury that rendered him disabled and filed a claim with the defendant for long-term disability benefits, which was denied in November 2016. The suit states his appeal was also denied.

The plaintiff holds Life Insurance Co. of North America responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to pay long-term disability benefit payments entitled to him, failed to provide a prompt and reasonable explanation of the basis relied on for the denial of his claims, and failed to properly and adequately investigate the merits of his disability claim.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against defendants, payment of disability benefits, costs and attorneys’ fees, interest, and further relief as the court deems just and proper. He is represented by Glenn R. Kantor of Kantor & Kantor LLP in Northridge.
