DLA Piper issued the following announcement on Jan. 7.
DLA Piper announced today that Tracy Shapiro has joined the firm's Intellectual Property and Technology practice as a partner in Northern California. She will be based in the San Francisco office.
Shapiro, who will be in the Data Protection, Privacy and Security group of the firm's Intellectual Property and Technology practice, focuses her practice on privacy and data security. She has extensive experience counseling technology clients on compliance with privacy laws, including Federal Trade Commission requirements, COPPA, VPPA, student privacy laws and the California Consumer Privacy Act. Shapiro spent six years as an attorney in the FTC's Division of Privacy and Identity Protection and Division of Advertising Practices, and in her practice she defends clients in FTC and state attorney general investigations. She also counsels clients on advertising and marketing laws, and the FTC's Endorsement Guidelines.
"Tracy brings deep experience counseling on privacy, data protection and cybersecurity, and on FTC investigations, which will strengthen and expand these core practice offerings," said Ann Ford, co-chair of DLA Piper's US IPT practice. "Privacy has become a top concern for many companies with a West Coast presence since the passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act this year, and Tracy is ideally placed to provide valuable guidance as businesses navigate the coming changes."
"Tracy's background advising emerging growth and VC-backed companies in data privacy and data protection matters will also be highly beneficial to our West Coast Emerging Growth practice," said Sang Kim, the firm's regional managing partner for Northern California. "We are thrilled to welcome her to the firm."
Shapiro, who joins from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, previously worked at the FTC in the Bureau of Consumer Protection's Division of Privacy and Identity Protection. She received her J.D. from the George Washington University Law School and her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
