Greenberg Traurig LLP issued the following announcement on Jan. 24.

Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Ian C. Ballon and Gretchen A. Ramos have been named among the “Top Cyber Lawyers in California” for 2019. The Daily Journal’s award honors California attorneys on the cutting-edge of cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection.

Ballon is the co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and an internet and mobile litigation shareholder in the firm’s Silicon Valley and Los Angeles offices. He defends data privacy, security breach, and TCPA class action suits, in addition to representing companies in other technology, IP and internet, and mobile-related complex litigation. A list of his recent cases may be found here. He is also the author of the leading treatise on internet law, E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise with Forms 2nd edition, the 5-volume set published by West (www.IanBallon.com), which includes extensive sections on data privacy, cybersecurity, and defending class action suits. In addition, he is the author of The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Handbook (West 2008) and The Complete State Security Breach Notification Compliance Handbook (West 2009). Ballon serves as executive director of Stanford University Law School’s Center for E-Commerce. He was most recently included in the Daily Journal’s 2018 “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” list, as well as being recognized as a “Groundbreaker” in The Recorder’s 2017 Litigation Departments of the Year Awards and an intellectual property “Trailblazer” by the National Law Journal. He was named the “Lawyer of the Year” for Technology Law in the 2019 and 2018 editions of The Best Lawyers in America, and for Information Technology Law in the 2016 and 2013 editions. In addition to his J.D. and LL.M., Ballon holds the CIPP/US certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

Ramos is a data privacy shareholder in the firm’s San Francisco office. She works with various size organizations, from large companies to startups, across a variety of industries—including health care and life sciences, fintech, and web-based companies—in building compliant data protection programs, negotiating data sharing and licensing agreements, incorporating privacy by design in new services, and assists them in preparing and handling all aspects of data breaches. She has represented clients in arbitrations and litigation, including class actions, in state and federal courts nationwide, which allows her to advise clients on the litigation risks in handling data protection issues. She has broad experience working with U.S.-based organizations, including various genetic data companies, on compliance, regulatory, emarketing, and product development issues related to U.S. laws, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the ePrivacy Directive.
