SAN FRANCISCO -- A woman claims to have suffered discrimination and whistleblowing retaliation for "trying to take on corruption, discrimination and homophobia" in the San Francisco Fire Department.

Nicol Juratovac filed a complaint on May 24 in the Superior Court of California County of San Francisco against the city and county of San Francisco.

According to the complaint, Assistant Chief Nicol Juratovac, a 23-year veteran of the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD), is "the first openly LGBTQ+, first Asian American, and first woman promoted to the highest Civil Service rank of Assistant Chief in the Department’s 155-year history." Juratovac alleged that the SFFD, since 2014, has continuously humiliated her, denied her promotion and overtime opportunities and has retaliated against her for whistleblowing activities about the discrimination she has endured.

Juratovac is represented by Therese Y. Cannata of Cannata, O'Toole, Fickes and Olson LLP.
