SACRAMENTO -- A woman is suing Sacramento County and her former landlords for her eviction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maria Doe, Clara Doe and I.D., all fictitious names, filed a federal complaint on August 11 in the Eastern District of California against the County of Sacramento, Scott Jones in his official capacity as Sacramento County Sheriff, Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Roe, Jagdeep Singh, Sushma Giri and Alida Estrada for wrongful eviction, due process violations and many other claims.

According to the complaint, Maria Doe lost her job at the beginning of COVID-19 and instead of honoring the emergency eviction moratorium, the person who was renting to the Doe family ordered them to leave and shut off the electricity.

Maria called the county for help but rather than receive assistance, she was victimized again, she says. Before Code Enforcement would send an inspector, the lessor enlisted the help of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office to allegedly force the family to vacate their apartment by threats, intimidation, and coercion.

Maria Doe seeks a declaratory judgment against the Municipal Defendants, issuing a writ of mandate, punitive damages and attorney's fees. Marie Doe is represented by Ezra Kautz.
