The American Lawyer Names Michael Sweet Among its Western Trailblazers

Fox Rothschild LLP congratulates Michael A. Sweet on his selection to The American Lawyer’s list of Western Trailblazers, which spotlights agents of change in the legal industry.

As Chair of the firm’s Financial Restructuring & Bankruptcy Department, Sweet leads a nationwide team that provides sophisticated, strategic guidance in corporate restructurings and bankruptcy litigation as well as in non-bankruptcy insolvency-related matters. Employing advanced firm technology and lessons learned during the pandemic, he mobilized a nimble, geographically-diverse team of bankruptcy attorneys who deploy quickly to serve clients in a full range of matters, in cities large and small, throughout the U.S.

The result of his leadership is a versatile, cohesive practice group that can pivot rapidly to address matters in nearly any corner of the U.S. “At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to adapt quickly to continue effectively advising clients…The efficiency of video appearances became clear on the day, early in the pandemic, that I appeared in court in large cases that were pending in three different states, all before lunchtime,” Sweet told American Lawyer.

Members of the department have deep knowledge of each other’s strengths, which allows the seamless assembly of tailor-made teams that comprehend the nuances of clients’ cases, and provide a crucial understanding of local markets, bankruptcy courts, trustees and businesses. This broad-ranging strategy has resulted in the firm’s earning numerous large creditors committee mandates since the start of 2020.

Working out of Fox’s San Francisco and Los Angeles offices, Sweet recognized that the technology and networking strategies that helped the firm weather the pandemic could be repurposed to create a highly connected national team within the bankruptcy practice. “Videoconferencing…has improved our flexibility and efficiency and resulted in better client service,” Sweet commented.

Partners have made new connections with colleagues who have complementary strengths and industry knowledge around the U.S., and associates have reaped professional development benefits through exposure to an unusually rich diversity of cases, partners and locales. Most importantly, however, firm clients around the country benefited from his trailblazing, team-oriented approach to client service.
