A class action lawsuit has accused the parent company of athletic caps retailer Lids of allegedly shorting worker pay, and other alleged violations of California labor law.

Named plaintiff Donald Vining filed suit in San Francisco County Superior Court on Feb. 13 against Hat World, Inc., Lids' parent company, accusing it of alleged violations of California labor laws.

Vining is identified only as a resident of California who worked at a Lids store in San Francisco from April-July 2023.

The lawsuit was filed under California's controversial Private Attorneys General Act, which empowers individual workers to stand in place of California state labor officials and sue their employers on behalf of all of their coworkers for alleged violations of California labor law. Critics of the law have asserted the PAGA law generates windfall profits for lawyers and civil penalties for the state, but much lesser benefits for workers.

The allegations include shorting worker pay and other unspecified labor law violations.

The plaintiffs are seeking civil penalties allowed under the PAGA law, plus attorney fees.

Vining is represented by attorney Arby Aiwazian, of Lawyers for Justice PC, of Glendale.
