In 2021, Quinn Emanuel achieved a complete trial victory in a lawsuit related to a series of eruptions of steam and oil on Chevron’s property in the Midway Sunset oil field outside Bakersfield, CA. Our client, a family-owned oil company called TRC, had to shut down dozens of oil wells for four years as a result of Chevron’s negligent operations. Quinn Emanuel sued Chevron on behalf of TRC, seeking to recover the tens of millions in lost profits from the shut in that Chevron’s negligence had caused. TRC prevailed at trial, with the jury awarding every penny TRC sought and rejecting Chevron’s counterclaims in full. However, following the trial, Chevron secured a motion for a new trial based on a juror eligibility issue. Our team appealed that ruling and Chevron cross-appealed the verdict.
Kathleen Sullivan headed the appeal. On June 21, 2024 the California Court of Appeal issued an extensive 86-page opinion, rejecting all of Chevron’s arguments and reinstating the $120 million dollar verdict for TRC.
Congratulations to this amazing team of attorneys!
