Reed Smith is pleased to announce that William R. “Bill” Overend, a trial lawyer focused on high-stakes tech litigation, has been honored by the Daily Journal as one of the Top Trade Secrets Lawyers in California for 2024.
This is the fifth such honor from the Daily Journal for Overend, who previously made the Top Trade Secrets Lawyers shortlist in 2019, 2021 and 2022, and was a named a Top IP Lawyer in 2016.
Overend was highlighted this year for his nearly three decades of experience leading complex trade secrets litigations involving innovative medical solutions, including several recent cases for Philips Medical Systems.
In his 2024 Daily Journal profile, Overend spoke of seeing an overall increase in trade secrets litigation, noting the rapidly evolving Artificial Intelligence sector presents “novel challenges and precedents” for such cases.
“AI raises many issues for trade secret law generally. For example, a claimed secret cannot legally qualify as such if it can be readily ascertained through reverse engineering or other proper means,” said Overend. “AI’s ability to rapidly reverse engineer certain technologies could thus have a huge impact on the validity of claims.”
