Irina Kovlerova has filed a lawsuit alleging medical malpractice against a doctor and a healthcare organization, claiming that their negligence led to the delayed diagnosis of her breast cancer. The complaint was filed on November 19, 2024, in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, naming Stephanie L. Jun, M.D., Sutter Health, and additional unnamed defendants as responsible parties.
According to the court documents, Irina Kovlerova visited the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Los Gatos Boulevard Breast Center for an annual mammogram screening on May 1, 2023. The results were reviewed by Dr. Stephanie L. Jun, who reported them as normal with no signs of malignancy. However, Irina's gynecologist later discovered a suspicious lump during an examination on August 25, 2023. Subsequent tests revealed a significant mass and abnormal lymph nodes in her right breast.
Irina was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma after further testing and underwent extensive treatment including chemotherapy and surgeries which were unsuccessful in fully removing the cancerous tissue. She claims that had Dr. Jun properly interpreted her initial mammogram results, she could have received timely treatment that might have prevented the progression of her cancer.
The lawsuit accuses Dr. Jun and Sutter Health of professional negligence for failing to provide medical services that met the standard of care expected in such cases. It alleges that this negligence resulted in unnecessary suffering and increased medical interventions for Irina.
Irina is seeking general and special damages for her physical and emotional distress, as well as compensation for medical expenses incurred due to the alleged malpractice. She also demands a jury trial to resolve these claims.
Representing Irina Kovlerova are attorneys Jamie G. Goldstein and Christopher A.J. Swift from Arias Sanguinetti Wang & Team LLP. The case is being overseen by Judge J. Nguyen under Case No.: 24CV452156.
