A high-stakes legal battle has erupted as a former executive accuses her employer of fostering a racially discriminatory and hostile work environment. Michelle Richard filed a complaint against Astreya Partners, Inc., Astreya Partners, LLC, and several individuals on December 6, 2024, in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara.
Michelle Richard's lawsuit against Astreya Partners details a troubling narrative of alleged racial discrimination and retaliation. Hired in May 2022 as Vice President of Global Human Resources, Richard claims she was promised a promotion to Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) by then-CEO Andrea Bendzick. This promise was reportedly pivotal in her decision to join the company. Despite receiving an "Exceeds" performance rating in February 2023 and being the only Black executive within the organization, Richard alleges that her advancement was unjustly stalled while less qualified non-Black individuals were promoted. The complaint highlights instances where Richard was excluded from board meetings and denied fair compensation compared to her peers.
The lawsuit further accuses Astreya Partners' new CEO Romil Bahl of perpetuating this discriminatory culture. After Bendzick's departure in May 2024, Bahl allegedly appointed Louise Winstone as CHRO without informing or considering Richard for the role. The suit claims this decision was part of a broader pattern of discrimination, with Bahl making dismissive remarks about Richard's qualifications and future at the company. Despite advocating for equal treatment and pay, Richard contends she faced increased hostility and exclusion from critical company communications.
Richard is seeking substantial relief from the court. Her demands include compensation for economic losses due to career setbacks and emotional distress caused by the alleged hostile work environment. She also seeks punitive damages to deter future misconduct by Astreya Partners and its executives. Additionally, she requests attorney fees under relevant employment laws that protect against workplace discrimination.
