ALAMEDA – A jury on Wednesday handed baby powder maker Johnson & Johnson a $29.4 million hit deciding that asbestos in the company’s baby powder had caused plaintiff Terry Leavitt to develop the deadly disease mesothelioma.
Michael Brown, the attorney for Johnson & Johnson, questioned its corporate representative on Thursday, intending to convince a jury that the company had not hidden from better testing methods and no evidence had been found to suggest baby powder caused plaintiff Terry Leavitt’s mesothelioma.
Lawyers for plaintiff Terry Leavitt, during a second day of grilling Johnson & Johnson spokesman John Hopkins, used inter-company documents to try to convince the jury that the company ignored reports of trace amounts of asbestos in its talc baby powder, and declined to switch to safer corn starch.

LOS ANGELES – Attorneys for the defense of Johnson & Johnson in a lawsuit alleging the company’s baby powder caused a woman to develop mesothelioma on Tuesday sought to establish that fragments in talc powder can look a lot like asbestos, and not actually be asbestos.
LOS ANGELES – A lead scientist for Imerys Talc America Inc., the talc mining company that supplies Johnson & Johnson with the talc used in its baby powder, said testing showed no asbestos.
LOS ANGELES – In the lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson for the baby powder a woman claims gave her the deadly disease mesothelioma, attorneys for the plaintiff on Tuesday produced an email in 2000 that indicated talc suppliers were trying to exploit confusion over a possible designation of talc as a “human carcinogen.”
SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California recently sided with citizen groups who filed a motion to complete the administrative record regarding the decision by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to suspend Waste Prevention Rule protections for one year.
Although it's not the largest award in a talc lawsuit, experts say the recent award of more than $22 million from a California jury to the family of a deceased paint-maker threatens to skew awards for future talc-asbestos lawsuits.
