California company sues BitTorrent user over alleged copyright infringement

SACRAMENTO — Malibu Media, LLC, is suing an unknown BitTorrent user assigned IP address 73.41.243.169, alleging copyright infringement.

The California company filed the complaint on Feb. 18 in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of California. 

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that the defendant used BitTorrent to copy and distribute its movies. The investigator, Excipio GmbH, allegedly was able to download one or more  digital media files from the defendant that belonged to Malibu Media without the company's permission. 

The plaintiff seeks the following: compensation for damages per infringed work, which includes ordering the defendant to delete and permanently remove all digital files associated with the plaintiff's work; legal fees; and any other relief this court deems just and proper. Malibu Media is represented by Brenna E. Erlbaum and Brian Heit of Heit Erlbaum, LLP in Newbury Park.
