Insurance firm files interpleader complaint over life insurance policy

SAN FRANCISCO – An insurance firm is seeking the court's aid in regards to a dispute over the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Unum Life Insurance Co. of America filed a complaint for interpleader on June 2 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Myra Sugiyama and Rita Wang Sugiyama.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that it issued an insurance policy to John Paul Sugiyama, who died in December 2015. The suit states he listed his sister, Myra Sugiyama, as the beneficiary. The plaintiff claims that John Paul Sugiyama's wife, Rita Wang Sugiyama, claims she is entitled to 50 percent of the life insurance proceeds.

The plaintiff seeks restrain the defendants from instituting or prosecuting any proceeding in any court affecting the property involved in this interpleader, require the defendants to settle between themselves their rights to the benefits, and all legal fees. It is represented by Anna M. Martin of Rimac Martin PC in San Francisco.
