L.A. County artwork business accuses retail store, suppliers of copyright infringement

LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles County artwork design business is suing a retail store and suppliers, alleging copyright infringement.

Unicolors Inc. of Vernon, California, filed a complaint Sept. 18 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against Zara USA Inc. of New York City and Does 1-10, alleging they distributed an intellectual property without authority from owner.

According to the complaint, Unicolors suffered monetary damages from the wrongful conduct of the defendants in manufacturing and/or supplying garments comprised of a fabric printed with the plaintiff’s copyrighted two-dimensional graphic artworks without the plaintiff’s knowledge or consent. 

The plaintiff alleges the defendants induced, participated in, aided and abetted in and profited from the illegal reproduction, importation, purchase, marketing, advertisement, distribution and/or sales of a product featuring Unicolors' design.

Unicolors seeks trial by jury, judgment against the defendants, profits from infringement, attorney fees, interest, costs of litigation, interest and all relief the court deems proper.
