SAN DIEGO — A disabled man is suing Torrance business owners, alleging disability discrimination and failure to uphold Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.
Orland Sylve, who requires use of a wheelchair, filed a complaint Jan. 16 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against Laurie Industries LLC, Carson Uniform & Fashion LLC and Does 1-10, alleging failure to to provide full and safe equal access to its facilities for people with disabilities.
According to the complaint, in August 2017, Sylve was at 1101 W. Carson St., Torrance, to shop. The suit says Sylve suffered difficulty and frustration from the defendants' wrongful conduct in failing to provide full and equal access to its facilities, including adequate parking spaces, pathways and transaction counters.
The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to provide accessible paths of travel in and throughout the merchandise aisles, failed to provide compliant accessible parking spaces and failed to modify transaction counters to make a portion accessible to a person with disability.
Sylve seeks trial by jury, actual damages and a statutory minimum of $4,000, injunctive relief, attorney fees, litigation expenses and costs of suit. He is represented by attorney Isabel Masanque of Center for Disability Access in San Diego.
