Man alleges Republic of Peru failed to pay bond valued at $907 million

LOS ANGELES – A Woodland Hills resident alleges he owns a bond issued in 1875 by Peru valued at several million dollars and that Peru has failed to pay the amount of the bond.

Beni Atoori filed a complaint on Feb. 26 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California against The Republic of Peru alleging breach of contract.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff is the owner of a certified and authentic bearer bond and is seeking payment from the defendant for the amount due according to the bond's language. The suit states the bonds were issued in New York City in 1875 pursuant to a contract with the Guano Consignment Co. and signed by the envoy extraordinaire and minister plenipotentiary of Peru. 

The plaintiff alleges the bond is valued today at $907 million and that the defendant has breached its promise to pay the bond.

The plaintiff seeks payment compounded semiannually at the rate of 7 percent per annum valued at $907 million, plus costs, attorneys' fees, pre- and post-judgment interest, and such other and further relief as the court may deem just and proper. He is representing himself.
