Burlingame Villa accused of neglecting 80-year-old dementia patient to the point of death

REDWOOD CITY - Allegations of elder abuse and a list of other civil charges were brought against Burlingame Villa LLC in the San Mateo County Superior Court.

According to documents filed on March 10, plaintiff Irena Mavridis brings the charges on behalf of her late father, Lazaros Mavridis, a former resident of the Burlingame Villa long-term care facility. He was admitted to the facility at the age of 80 in 2013, and remained there until his death in 2020. Mavridis was a dementia patient who required full-time care.

The plaintiff says that Burlingame Villa failed to give her father the care and attention he needed, often leaving the elderly man alone and unassisted for hours at a time. He was also allowed to wander outside the facility without any staff noticing him, the lawsuit says. The decedent fell outside and spent an entire night alone and unable to get up before he was noticed, the suit claims.

The plaintiff's father eventually became bed-bound and was rarely offered assistance with basic hygiene needs, such as using the restroom, brushing his teeth and bathing, the suit claims. He developed pressure ulcers from being left in his bed with no care for extended periods of time, the suit claims.

Lazaros Mavridis suffered a fall and broken hip and, despite facility staff telling the plaintiff that her father was fine, the plaintiff chose to visit her father herself as a registered nurse and found his condition to be so poor that he needed emergent care, the suit says. The plaintiff's father died as a result of the injuries and lack of care he sustained in the facility, the suit says.

Burlingame Villa is charged with neglect, violation of patient's rights pursuant to health and safety code, negligence, fraud and wrongful death.

Mavridis is seeking damages deemed fit by the court. She is represented by the Arns Law Firm.
