A former medical assistant has filed a lawsuit against her previous employer, a California-based medical practice, alleging pregnancy discrimination and other labor violations. The complaint was filed by Mayra Jimenez on March 12, 2025, in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, against Durga Madala M.D., Inc., and its owner Dr. Durga Madala.

Mayra Jimenez's legal battle highlights serious allegations of workplace discrimination and unfair labor practices. Employed for nearly eight years at the medical practice located in Los Gatos, California, Jimenez claims she faced discrimination and retaliation after becoming pregnant with her second child in August 2023. According to the complaint, despite being on protected pregnancy leave following the birth of her child in March 2024, Jimenez was coerced into returning to work prematurely under threat of eviction from company-provided housing. "Dr. Madala said if you don’t work full time from May 1 until your back in June 17. You will have to pay rent of $3000 plus your utilities," read a text message from her supervisor cited in the lawsuit.

Jimenez's case is not only about alleged pregnancy discrimination but also involves multiple violations of California's wage and hour laws. The complaint details how understaffing led to frequent denial of minimum wages and overtime pay, as well as failure to provide compliant meal and rest periods. Additionally, Jimenez accuses the defendants of failing to reimburse necessary business expenses such as internet costs and work-related phone usage.

The plaintiff is seeking compensatory damages for lost wages and emotional distress, punitive damages for what she describes as "oppressive" conduct by her employer, as well as attorney fees and costs associated with bringing the lawsuit forward. The complaint also seeks injunctive relief to prevent future discriminatory practices by the defendants.

Represented by attorneys Jose Macias Jr., Hector J. Rodriguez, and Travis M. Adams from Macias Rodriguez Adams LLP based in San Jose, CA, Jimenez’s case has been assigned Case No.: 25CV460938 under Judge P. Hernandez at the Superior Court of California in Santa Clara County.
