Jason Edmonds, a former employee of Sunrun Installation Services Inc., has filed a lawsuit alleging disability discrimination and wrongful termination. The complaint was filed on April 1, 2025, in the Superior Court of California for the County of Santa Clara by attorney Narak Mirzaie. Edmonds accuses Sunrun Installation Services Inc. of failing to accommodate his medical condition and subsequently terminating his employment.
The case revolves around events that began in July 2024 when Edmonds experienced severe pain in his lower back and arms, leading to medical leave approved by Sunrun's leave specialist, Kasey Streets. Despite providing all necessary documentation to Human Resources and third-party administrator Broadspire, Edmonds faced complications when Streets denied his leave on August 20, 2024, demanding he return to work or request accommodations within 48 hours. After resubmitting his medical note as instructed, Edmonds received no response from Streets regarding the document's status.
On October 15, 2024, Edmonds was diagnosed with a condition affecting his back muscles and nerves, extending his leave until January 5, 2025. However, upon contacting HR representative Diana Camacho Quecano on October 16 to confirm receipt of his medical note, Edmonds learned that Sunrun had terminated his employment on October 8 without prior communication. This lack of engagement in an interactive process or accommodation for Edmonds' disability forms the basis of the lawsuit.
Edmonds contends that his disability was a motivating factor in Sunrun's decision to terminate him. He claims that this action violated several provisions under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), including disability discrimination and failure to accommodate or engage in an interactive process. As a result of these alleged violations, Edmonds seeks economic damages for lost earnings and benefits, non-economic damages for emotional distress and psychological harm, punitive damages under Civil Code §3294 for malicious conduct by Sunrun’s management, penalties under applicable labor codes, as well as attorney fees and costs associated with the suit.
