A 74-year-old man is taking legal action against a prominent medical institution for alleged negligence and elder abuse, claiming that their oversight led to his severe injuries. Alejandro Loquillano filed a complaint on April 9, 2025, in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, against Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the County of Santa Clara. The lawsuit accuses these entities of failing to provide adequate care during his treatment at their facility.

The case revolves around an incident that occurred on July 19, 2024, when Loquillano was receiving kidney treatment at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center's Renal Clinic. Despite being recognized as a fall risk by the medical staff, he was left unsupervised in a wheelchair outside the clinic. This negligence allegedly resulted in him rolling down a ramp and crashing, leading to significant injuries. Loquillano claims that he sought the defendants' expertise for diagnosis and treatment related to his kidney disease but received substandard care instead.

In his complaint, Loquillano asserts that the defendants breached their duty of care by not exercising the necessary skill and diligence expected from medical professionals. He alleges that this breach directly caused him physical harm and financial burdens due to medical expenses incurred from additional treatments required post-incident. "Defendants’ negligence was a substantial factor in causing Plaintiff’s harm," states the complaint.

Loquillano is pursuing multiple causes of action against the defendants: medical malpractice, general negligence, and elder abuse under California Welfare & Institutions Code §§ 15600 et seq. The latter claim highlights his age and vulnerability during his time under their care, emphasizing that they failed to meet his basic needs adequately.

The plaintiff seeks general damages exceeding the court's jurisdictional minimum alongside special damages as determined by proof presented during trial. Additionally, he requests enhanced remedies specific to elder abuse cases under state law provisions. The lawsuit also demands coverage for legal costs incurred throughout this process.

Representing Alejandro Loquillano is attorney Michael E. Hale from Liuzzi, Murphy, Solomon, Churton, Hale & Winnett LLP based in Novato, California. The case has been assigned Case No.: 22CV463068 at the Superior Court of California in Santa Clara County.
