A massive data breach has led to a class action lawsuit against a prominent insurance company, highlighting the growing concerns over consumer privacy and data security. On April 15, 2025, Rita Evans filed a complaint in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, against Globe Life Inc., alleging violations of the California Consumer Privacy Act and Unfair Competition Law.

The case revolves around an unauthorized release of personally identifiable information (PII) from Globe Life Inc.'s computer network on June 13, 2024. This breach exposed sensitive data such as names, Social Security numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses, dates of birth, health information, and policy details of approximately 850,000 individuals. The plaintiff claims that Globe Life Inc. failed to implement reasonable security measures to protect this information as required by law. According to the complaint, "Defendant has failed to maintain reasonable security controls and systems appropriate for the nature of the PII it maintains."

Rita Evans and her legal team argue that Globe Life Inc.'s negligence resulted in significant harm to consumers whose data was compromised. They assert that the company did not notify affected individuals promptly or adequately about the breach and its potential consequences. The complaint states that "Defendant has still not mailed out any notices to its customers" even months after discovering the breach. Furthermore, it alleges that Globe Life Inc.'s failure to secure customer data violates both the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California's Unfair Competition Law (UCL).

The plaintiffs are seeking various forms of relief from the court. They demand actual and statutory damages under CCPA provisions and request injunctive relief compelling Globe Life Inc. to adopt better security practices. Additionally, they seek an order mandating prolonged free credit monitoring for those affected by the breach.

Representing Rita Evans in this case are attorneys Mark D. Potter, James M. Treglio, Isabel Rose Masanque, and Jason Kyle Masanque from Potter Handy LLP. The case is presided over by Judge Sahar Enayati with Case ID CGC-25-624425.
