Uber is facing a lawsuit that highlights serious allegations of negligence and misconduct. The complaint, filed by Jane Doe V.T. in the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco on April 24, 2025, accuses Uber Technologies, Inc., along with its subsidiaries Rasier, LLC and Rasier-CA, LLC, of failing to protect passengers from sexual assault by its drivers.
According to the complaint, Jane Doe V.T. was assaulted by an Uber driver during a ride she booked through the Uber app on May 10, 2023. The lawsuit claims that the driver engaged in inappropriate behavior including groping and exposing himself to her. The plaintiff alleges that Uber's negligence in hiring and supervising drivers contributed to this incident. The complaint argues that Uber has been aware since at least 2014 that some drivers have sexually assaulted passengers but has failed to implement adequate safety measures or background checks.
The lawsuit paints a picture of a company more focused on growth than passenger safety. It claims that Uber’s executives have historically prioritized expansion over implementing effective safety protocols. For instance, it is alleged that Uber's background checks are insufficient and do not include fingerprinting or checking against FBI databases. Moreover, the complaint suggests that despite public acknowledgment of a sexual assault crisis within its platform, Uber has not taken meaningful steps to address these issues.
Jane Doe V.T.'s legal action seeks damages for physical and emotional harm suffered due to the alleged assault. She accuses Uber of general negligence, negligent hiring and supervision, common carrier negligence, and failure to warn passengers about potential risks associated with using their service. The plaintiff is seeking both actual and punitive damages for what she describes as wanton disregard for passenger safety.
