The lawsuit, Conservatorship of the Person and Estate of A.S. (case ID: C098739), was filed in the Court of Appeal of the State of California, Third Appellate District on April 9, 2024. The plaintiff is Mono County Public Guardian, while A.S. is the defendant.

The case revolves around A.S., who was found to be gravely disabled under the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act (LPS). The court reappointed Mono County Public Guardian as A.S.'s conservator for a one-year period ending on May 17, 2024. A.S. contested this decision, arguing that his motion to dismiss the petition to reappoint the conservator was unjustly denied due to inadequate notice.

On December 10, 2020, Mono County Director of Behavioral Health was appointed as A.S.'s conservator and was successively reappointed until May 17, 2023. On February 7, 2023, Mono County created the Office of the Public Guardian to serve as conservator in all cases. Following this change, a hearing held on April 6, 2023 saw county counsel state that they intended to extend A.S.'s conservatorship.

The plaintiff seeks affirmation from the court regarding their appointment as A.S.'s conservator for another year despite his objections. They argue that no prejudice has occurred in their actions and thus seek validation from the court.
